About Belize

Belize is a kaleidoscope of ancient civilizations, lively cultures, untamed natural beauty, and exotic wildlife. Considered as one of the most naturally diverse and scenically beautiful countries in Central America, Belize is situated southeast of Mexico along the Caribbean Sea and just north of Honduras. The landscape offers a variety of incredibly diverse eco-systems that are rich in both fauna and flora. The country of Belize has more protected reserves, national forests and marine sanctuaries than any country in Central America.

Belize is home to the second largest barrier reef system in the world. The magnificent Belize Barrier Reef—the nation’s largest tourist attraction—expands across 300 miles of palm-strewn islands, cayes, and beaches off the coast.  The world-class scuba diving, snorkeling and marine activities off the Barrier Reef contribute to Belize’s deserved reputation as an outdoor lovers paradise, with a wide variety of land and marine excursions. From cave tubing through meandering rivers, to hiking cascading waterfalls, or bird watching in the Cockscomb Preserve, land adventures abound.

Belize has a long history of ethnically diverse people and cultures from the Mayan civilizations, to the pirates that moored along the coastal Cayes as safe refuge, to the British colonial expansion. Today the laid-back Belizean culture shares more in common with their Caribbean neighbors than any Central American countries.

What makes Belize unique?

The historical significance of Belize has given birth to one of the most diverse cultures found anywhere within the western hemisphere.  With a history steeped in mysticism of ancient Maya civilizations, Pirates, Tradesmen, Mariners, African Slaves and British Colonialists, Belize represents a vibrant and eclectic mix of cultures.  The land is home to some of the world’s finest archeological ruins hidden throughout the dense tropical jungles of Belize.

As unique as the culture of Belize is, so too is the diversity of the landscape of this small, unassuming country. From the expansive protected jungles and hardwood forests of western Belize, to the undulating foot hills, savannah plains and low-lying wetlands of the coast, Belize’s landscape is an ecological eden of sacred eco-systems. The Belize Barrier Reef is the heart of the land – it represents a life force for the community, fauna and flora, and is the economic backbone of Belize. With hundreds of exotic cayes scattered across miles of shallow waters and pristine coral reefs, this living natural phenomenon offers spectacular diving locations, eco-friendly resorts and protected wildlife reserves.
